The social status and a car: How is the image of transportation mode influencing our behaviour

  • Original language description

The automobile has an important role in modern society due to its ability to shape our daily lives, society and even the environment. There is no argument that a car has many positive attributes. In certain contexts, it can be fast, flexible, individual, safe or even a cheap transportation mode. Nevertheless, in other contexts, it is the exact same opposite and even then it is still massively used. We are asking a question if the image and representation of the car are as important as the object itself. Our behaviour can be influenced by the image of an automobile and other modes as well. The contexts in which the transportation modes are mentioned are a very important part of our subjective knowledge which is translated in our choices. An important part of the presentation is how is the automobile perceived in relation to social status and what does it symbolize. Is the need to own and use a car purely practical or is it necessary to validate ourselves to modern society by its ownership? How this need differs in certain stages of life, for students or employees, for women and men? The presentation tries to answer these and other questions based on qualitative research conducted in the city of Brno (CZ) which answers these questions in the context of urban mobility of a post-socialistic city.
