Toxicity, uptake and retention of sodium mercaptoborate (BSH) in glial and glioma cells in culture
Original language description
Growth, morphology and viability of C6 glioma cells were significantly altered only in fast growing cultures exposed to supratherapeutic doses of BSH (sodium mercaptoborate) for 48 to 72 h. Inhibition of cell proliferation and loss of semipermeability ofplasma membrane of cells exposed to toxic doses of BSH were followed by apoptotic fragmentation of DNA in a small part of population. In the remaining lethally damaged cells the process of cell-destruction appeared to be inhibited. the higher uptake ofBSH by transformed glial cells suggests that the BSH content in brain tumours in situ may be controlled not only by deffects in the hematoencephalic barrier but also by tumour cellphenotype.
