Apoptosis in pig leucocytes during cardiopulmonary bypass

  • Original language description

The aim of this study was to observe programmed cell death (PCD) activation in pig leucocytes durind cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Blood samples were taken prior to, during, and after CPB. Apoptosis was detected using TUNEL assay and by typical apoptoticmorphology changes (Giemsa staining). Apoptotic DNA fragmentation was proved in high percentage of cells in the operating beginning. A decrease in the number of apoptotic cells was detected in the surviving pigs after the aorta clip release. On the other hand, the number of apoptotic leucocytes did not significantly change in pigs died owing to postperfusion syndrom. The same alterations in percentage of apoptotic cells were proved in bone marrow after chest opening, after surgery and in dead animals. These results suggested that PCD can play a role in the postperfusion syndrome after CPB.
