Visuals in Geography Textbooks: Increasing the Reliability of a Research Instrument
Original language description
Development of textbooks is strongly influenced by the ever-increasing importance of visual culture. Even though numerous research findings prove positive effects visuals have on learning process, a considerable gap was identified regarding assessment ofvisuals in geography textbooks. This chapter aims to describe the process of development of a research instrument ? a system of categories ? for sorting types of visuals in geography textbooks and assessing their instructional qualities: their abstractness, text relatedness and caption aptness. Particular importance is given to research instrument reliability assessment. Methodological challenges arising in the course of the development of the system of categories are depicted together with measures taken to increase the reliability of the research instrument. Possibilities as well as limitations of practical use of this research instrument are presented in the conclusion.
