Women On Boards And Willingness To Compete In The Experimental Setting

  • Original language description

Nowadays, women occupy a larger percentage of positions within the companies. Nevertheless, they are still underrepresented in the leading positions and on boards. The lack of women on boards, in managerial positions or other leading functions at all, could be partially explained by their lower willingness to compete compared to men. Further to the studies showing that diversity in groups enhances productivity and performance and studies presenting that women are equally productive and educated, the question arises how to motivate high-performing women to be willing to compete. The analysis of the information collected from the laboratory experiment shows that provision of information indicating the average performance of similar individuals on the specific task increases the willingness to compete of high-performing women without loss of competitiveness of high-performing men. Moreover, no significant (neither negative nor positive) change in the performance was found.
