The Role of Auxin and Cytokinin Crosstalk in Root Gravitropism.

  • Original language description

Root gravitropism is an active movement allowing directed root growth to stabilise plant location and facilitate acquisition of nutrients essential for plant life. A key role in gravitropism has been attributed to the phytohormone auxin. Auxin distribution and gradient formation is regulated by membrane transporters, among them auxin efflux carriers from the PIN family. However, in complex physiological processes phytohormones do not act separately. Cytokinin-mediated regulation of auxin transport was recently demonstrated in the processes of e.g. de novo organogenesis or lateral root formation. Thus, cytokinin might cooperate with auxin in the regulation of the root gravitropic response, too. To inspect the potential role of auxin/cytokinin interactions in the root gravitropism and growth we used transgenic plant lines with depleted endogenous cytokinin levels (Pro35S:AtCKX2 and 3), mutants in cytokinin receptors (ahk) and mutants in auxin transporters (pin).
