The book consists of five parts. Part I (the first half of the book) contains all necessary theorems from the theory of Sobolev spaces which are needed in the theory of the finite element method. The proofs of these theorems are written in a minute, circumstantial and readable way. Parts III and V concerning variational problems in domains with cusp-points and semiregular finite elements, respectively, are published in a book form for the first time. Parts II and IV devoted to basic applications of Soboolev spaces in the finite element method and parabolic-elliptic variational problems, respectively, complete the monograph into a comprehensive work.

Kniha se skládá z pěti částí. Část I (první polovina knihy) obsahuje všechna nezbytná tvrzení z teorie Sobolevových prostorů, jež jsou nezbytné v metodě konečných prvků. Důkazy jsou psány v stručné, přehledné a čitelné formě. Části III a V se týkají variačních problémů v oblastech s body vratu a semiregulárním konečným prvkům a jsou psány vůbec poprvé v knižní formě. Části II a IV jsou věnované základním aplikacím Sobolevovým prostorům v metodě konečných prvků a parabolicko-eliptickým variačním problémůům resp, dávají knize ucelený tvar.
