Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers used in Passive Optical Networks
Original language description
In this paper, the possibilities of using Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) in Passive Optical Network (PON) are dealt with. A passive optical network with a splitting ratio 1:64 and a symmetric data rate of 1.244 Gb/s was chosen for the simulation.Currently used SOAs can amplify an optical signal in one direction only. Hence, a bidirectional signal has to be divided for two separated directions using separate amplifiers. Firstly, the maximum distance without amplifiers was verified. Subsequently, optical amplifiers were placed behind the Optical Line Termination (OLT), in front of the splitter and in front of the Optical Network Termination (ONT). Results have shown the best placement of a pair of amplifiers is in front of the splitter.
