This article focuses on a justification of the meaning of the process of internationalisation of small and middle sized companies in the Czech Republic. We briefly outline the contemporary recognition of the growing role of SME´s in world economics before discussing the distinctive environment faced by Czech SMEs, mostly the result of the short history of SME´s in the Czech Republic. At the beginning of the economic transformation the SME´s sector did not exist at all and the number of foreign companiess in the economics of the Czech Republic was insignificant. Since 1989 major changes in this sector have taken place. SME´s are considered to be the main driving power of the country?s economic growth ad structural changes. The research project focuses mainly on three aspects that influence the position of Czech SME´s in the process of internationalisation and their competitiveness.
