The paper aims to introduce the adequate theoretical background for the research in the competence field. Managerial competence as we define it today reflects a combination of potential, abilities to detect and solve the problems. And this is what companies today are looking for and what they consider as more and more important. This study attempts to describe and analyze usage and relationship between competencies and managerial work in the companies. Article describes the research approaches to competence research in the past 30 years. Next up there are the most cites competencies definitions. Closely connected to definitions is the classification of competencies, which had been precisely described as well. The key aspects of Management by Competencies (MBC) which combines the managerial work and its relationship with the competencies and models of competencies had been clarified.
