The Future Learner: (Digital) Education Reimagined for 2040

  • Original language description

This report explores how digital education may evolve by 2040, using a foresight-based approach developed within the European Digital Education Hub. It identifies major technological, social, economic, environmental, and political trends shaping future learning, including generative AI, immersive technologies, demographic shifts, wellbeing, and sustainability. The authors develop four scenario archetypes—empowered learning, constrained education, decline, and transformation—to illustrate plausible futures and their implications for learners, educators, and institutions. Through these scenarios, the report highlights opportunities for personalised and lifelong learning, as well as risks related to inequality, overregulation, technological dependence, misinformation, and environmental impact. Narrative “day in the life” stories bring each scenario to life, showing how different futures could affect everyday educational practice. The report aims to raise awareness among policymakers and practitioners about the long-term consequences of today’s decisions and to support strategic planning for resilient, inclusive, and human‑centred digital education systems.
