The Challenges of Mobile-App-Based Foreign Language Teaching and Learning
Original language description
The objective of this paper is to identify, analyse and inform on the state-of-the-art mobile applications used predominantly for the purposes of foreign language teaching and learning. In order to keep us up-to-date with the latest educational tech tools, the author examines in particular those mobile applications which are suitable for seamless integration into lesson plans and simultaneously have the potential of enhancing the quality of instruction. Being fully absorbed by mobile app environment is a natural part of students' lifestyle and there is absolutely no reason why university teachers should not make use of this opportunity, engage students and increase their attention span while pursuing educational goals in gaining relevant competences in foreign languages or other subjects. Though it may seem quite challenging at first, as the entry level of knowledge and skills requires certain rudimentary IT competences, it is worth trying. Creating and sharing lesson plans with the integration of mobile apps can boost creativity and help teachers to gain self-confidence. The paper brings information on the portfolio of mobile apps suitable for teachers, on the mobile apps teachers can recommend to their students, and last but not least on the mobile apps enabling peer-to-peer and social learning with the integration of social media. Mobile apps with elements of gamification are also included. An online survey carried out among foreign language learners and teachers provides fresh data pertaining to the researched topic.
