SVOBODA, Petr, Miloš FALTUS, Vladimír NESVADBA and Jitka CHARVÁTOVÁ. Cryoconservation of hop pollen [poster]. The IV International Symposium on Plant Cryopreservation. International Society for Horticultural Science, 12 - 15 June 2023, Oslo, Norway. Cryopreservation of pollen offers a simple and effective method of long-term pollen storage. In the liquid nitrogen may be pollen stored for many years without loss of its essential capabilities to pollinate, fertilize, and set normal seed when used in plant breeding, for controlled pollinations, or for the conservation of plant genetic resources. Hop breeding processes may have problems with both the availability and quality of pollen and keeping parents entering the cross or male hop plants until their quality is verified by evaluating the performance of their progeny. This work has shown that for safe storage of pollen using a cryopreservation method, the water content of the water must be less than 0.27 g of water per g dry matter. No significant endothermic or exothermic events were detected in all genotypes tested. The method was successfully tested on twelve selected genotypes of hops.
