A new strategy for the long-term control of Plum pox virus
Original language description
Genetically modified (GM) plum (Prunus domestica L.) clone C5 ('HoneySweet') is the first plum cultivar that cannot be infected by Plum pox virus (PPV) by using inoculated aphids. PPV resistance combining that of a stone-fruit variety with resistance to PPV-inoculated aphids and a rootstock with the same phenotype can produce a scion that will remain PPV free for its entire life. The rootstock myrobalan PK, which is suitable for plum and apricot cultivars, also cannot be infected with PPV through aphid inoculation. We propose that the GM plum cultivar 'HoneySweet' grafted on the rootstock myrobalan PK will resist aphid-transmitted PPV infection completely. Resistance to PPV through aphid inoculation, conditioned by one dominant gene locus, can be used to develop new PPV-resistant varieties with the same level of resistance to aphid-transmitted PPV. Cross-hybridization between PPV-resistant 'HoneySweet' plum and 'Domácí velkoplodá' plum, a popular cultivar with high-quality fruits, but very susceptible to PPV, have been carried out. The aim of this research is to obtain an available scion that will remain PPV free in orchards. Ultimately, this will provide long-term stable production for growers, and a dependable supply of healthful fruits for consumers.
