Virtual Reality as a Tool for Civil Protection Education

  • Original language description

This chapter explores the transformative role of virtual reality (VR) as a tool in civil protection education. VR enables the simulation of realistic crisis scenarios—such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, or terrorist attacks—allowing both professionals and the general public to practice appropriate responses in a safe, controlled environment. The technology facilitates practical training in evacuation, first aid, and crisis communication, providing immediate feedback and supporting repeated practice without the risks and costs associated with real-life exercises. VR also enhances the coordination and tactical skills of integrated emergency services by enabling complex, multi-agency simulations. With ongoing advancements, VR is becoming more accessible and is increasingly integrated into both professional and public education, including school curricula. The chapter highlights the importance of instructor training, content development, and the adaptation of VR to specific user needs. Ultimately, VR is positioned as an indispensable and evolving tool for improving preparedness, response, and resilience in the face of emergencies.
