Development and Perspectives of Modern Technologies in Civil Protection Education – Virtual Reality Application in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the development, current state, and future perspectives of virtual reality (VR) applications in civil protection education and crisis management in the Czech Republic. It traces the evolution of VR from early experimental projects in the late 1990s to its growing integration into education, emergency services, and public awareness initiatives. The text highlights key projects and technologies used by the Integrated Rescue System, universities, and private companies, emphasizing the benefits of realistic, safe, and repeatable crisis simulations for both professionals and the general public. It also compares the approaches of Czech higher education institutions to VR adoption, identifying leading universities, technical and organizational barriers, and student satisfaction. A SWOT analysis summarizes the main strengths (such as advanced infrastructure and state support), weaknesses (notably high costs and limited access), opportunities (including international cooperation and technological advances), and threats (like funding shortfalls and cybersecurity risks) related to VR implementation in this field. The chapter concludes that VR is becoming an essential tool for modern civil protection training, but further investment, teacher training, and content development are needed to maximize its potential.
