Development and Perspectives of Modern Technologies in Civil Protection Education – Application of Virtual Reality in Slovakia
Original language description
This chapter analyzes the development, current applications, and future perspectives of virtual reality (VR) in civil protection education and crisis management in Slovakia. It traces the evolution of VR from its early use in academic research and medical training to its current integration across sectors such as healthcare, industry, and especially security and crisis management. The text highlights pioneering Slovak companies and institutions—such as Virtual Medicine, Virtuplex, and the University of Žilina—demonstrating how VR is used for realistic and repeatable simulations of emergency scenarios, risk assessment, and professional training of rescue and security personnel. The chapter also discusses the implementation of advanced simulation platforms for military, firefighting, and public safety education, as well as the challenges of high acquisition costs, technological complexity, and limited integration into curricula. A SWOT analysis outlines the strengths (realistic, safe, cost-effective training), weaknesses (costs, complexity), opportunities (technological advancement, broader application), and threats (infrastructure, cybersecurity risks) of VR adoption. The conclusion emphasizes that, despite barriers, VR represents a transformative tool for enhancing preparedness, decision-making, and resilience in the face of security threats in Slovakia.
