Development and Perspectives Of Modern Technologies in Civil Protection Education – The Application of Virtual Reality in Poland
Original language description
This chapter examines the development and application of virtual reality (VR) in civil protection education in Poland, emphasizing its growing significance amid increasing global, technological, and socio-political risks. VR is presented not as a fleeting trend, but as a robust, methodologically grounded tool that enables immersive, interactive simulations for crisis management, emergency response, and risk assessment. The text highlights the expanding use of VR in Polish academic institutions, emergency services, and public-private partnerships, with applications ranging from mass casualty triage and CBRN incident management to evacuation drills and decision-making exercises. Empirical data show strong acceptance and rising competence among users, though challenges remain in standardization, interoperability, and equitable access. Notable projects include VR4Safety, VISUS VR, and ClassVR, as well as initiatives integrating VR with AI, geospatial systems, and biometric analytics. The chapter also discusses the need for a coordinated national strategy and sustainable institutional frameworks to fully realize VR’s transformative potential in crisis education. A SWOT analysis identifies Poland’s strengths in government support and technological infrastructure, as well as opportunities for international cooperation and technological advancement, while acknowledging barriers such as high costs, regional disparities, and cybersecurity risks. The conclusion underscores VR’s essential role in building societal resilience and preparing both professionals and the public for complex emergencies.
