Utilization of waste acid whey from dairy industry in the production of microorganism-enriched hydrogels
Original language description
Hydrogel is suitable for the improving of water retention due to repeated binding and releasing of water. Microorganisms also play a significant role in soil formation. For the production of biodegradable hydrogels acid whey and carboxymethyl cellulose were used and citric acid was used as a cross-linker. The absorption capacity of xerogels, was monitored in 3 swelling cycles. Xerogels showed good absorption capacity, which had an increasing tendency with the number of cycles. From the dynamics of swelling, the loss of the xerogel and the analysis of the leachates, the potential of use is evident not only for water retention in the soil, but also for the gradual release of nutrients for plants. Hydrogels were enriched with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, CCDM 281) or lactic bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum, CCDM 182). In the given matrix, mainly yeast thrived, whose counts were 6.5x105 CFU/g even after 6 months of storage at laboratory temperature.
