    Demineralization of water contaminated with nitrates

  • Original language description

    his work deals with electrodialytic demineralization of water polluted with nitrates. Nitrates are harmful for human?s health, as they are proven carcinogens (risk of cancer of the thyroid) and they cause illness methemoglobinemia and lead to expansion of blood vessels. The source of nitrates is e.g. households, agriculture and industries. Main polluters are e.g. fertilizers. Nitrogen, which is unused by plants, is got into water by irrigation, rainwater or melting snow. Ion exchangers, electrodialysisand reverse osmosis are commonly used to remove nitrates from water. Electrodialysis belongs to membrane processes and its driving force is electrical potential difference. The basic principle of electrodialysis is that two electrodes are separated by charged membranes, cation exchange membranes and anion exchange membranes. Cation exchange membranes repel anions and only allow cation transport. Anion exchange membranes repel cations and only allow anion transport. The aim of this work w
