In these experiments, I compared whey demineralization electrodialysis process in terms of batch and continuous flow system set-up. Continuous flow was simulated using two tanks as if the material had flown through multiple modules in series. There were eight sets of experiments performed on module EDR-Y/50-0.8. During all tests, I observed changes in pH, conductivity at 25°C, density, titratable acidity, refractometric solids, total solids, and ash. Electrodialysis demineralization appears to be more effective when performed in continuous mode. The same level of demineralization can be reached in significantly less time. On the contrary, continuous mode requires much larger membrane area which leads to higher initial and operating costs.
