Research on the Influence of Burnout Syndrome on Alcohol and Nicotine Abuse among Teaching Staff in the Czech Republic
Original language description
The paper describes some of the negative effects of burnout syndrome among teaching staff in the Czech Republic. The aim of the conducted research study was to find out what effects the burnout syndrome has on educators' motivation to alcohol consumption and smoking cigarettes. The paper describes burnout syndrome on the basis of areas identified within Maslach Burnout Inventory (hereinafter MBI): emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. The research study was carried out on a sample of 396 of teaching staff working at ISCED levels 0, ISCED 1, ISCED 2, and ISCED 3 in schools and educational facilities in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, the respondents completed the Alcohol and Nicotine Abuse Inventory. Using this tool, the effect of selected factors on the motivation of teaching staff to consume alcohol or smoke cigarettes was observed. The results of the research study shows that 67% of respondents show signs of burnout syndrome in at least one of the MBI defined areas, and most of them are burnt out in the area of personal accomplishment. The motivation of teaching staff to consume alcoholic beverages and nicotine and its frequency was observed separately among staff who were burnt out (N = 267) and those not affected by the burnout (N = 129). The results were compared using ANOVA-test and Tukey's HSD test at significance level ? = 0.05. The research study has demonstrated that the burnout syndrome affects significantly the frequency of the motives leading educators to consumption of alcoholic beverages or smoking cigarettes.
