Effect of the roller crown shape on the cam

  • Original language description

The aim of this paper is to outline the issues of the influence of the cam follower crown geometric shape in cam mechanisms on the stress of the surface layers of the general kinematic pair. The mentioned type of kinematic constraint in the practical embodiment is usually most often constituted by a straight roller and a cam or a crowned roller and a cam. Near the shape discontinuities, intersections of the cylindrical profile with the cam profile, there is a sharp increase in the size of the reduced stresses. This is one of the reasons for the practical application of crowned rollers. The disadvantage of this solution is that the greatest stress values will be reached in the middle of the contact area. With the logarithmic profile of the roller crown, a uniform stress distribution for different load levels of the general kinematic pair can be achieved. However, the production of such a general roller crown profile is a technologically demanding issue in the required precision and quality. A certain compromised solution is the design of a part-crown roller. In order to optimize the profile shape of the part-crown roller, the Finite Element Method - FEM can be used with some advantages.
