Medical and Biochemical Applicability of Silica Nanofibers
Original language description
Silica nanofibers have great potential in medic and biotechnology applications. The essential conditions for biomedical applications are their nontoxicity (the nanofibers as well as their degradation products), a suitable chemical resistance (to control the rate of dissolution in aqueous media) and the reactivity of their surface, allowing for the immobilization of biomolecules. Drugs (antibiotics, analgesics, cytostatics), proteins, enzymes, peptides and other chemical substances (growth factors and disinfectants) are classified into biomolecules suitable for immobilization. The immobilization of molecules onto the surface of a biodegradable material not only results in an increase in its activity and stability, but also allows us to affect its site of action.
