Hydrothermally folic acid-tannic acid capped Cu nanoparticles for solid phase extraction of aflatoxin B1 followed by HPLC-FLD

  • Original language description

In this study, folic acid–tannic acid capped copper nanoparticles (FA–TA–Cu NPs) were synthesised using a one-step hydrothermal method and characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The synthesised nanoparticles were employed as an adsorbent for dispersive solid-phase extraction of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), followed by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD). Optimisation of key parameters indicated that, under optimal conditions (pH 7.0, 10 mg adsorbent, 10 min contact time, and acetonitrile as the desorbing solvent), the method displayed linear ranges of 0.30–20.0 μg/kg in rice and 0.50–20.0 μg/kg in maize samples. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) based on a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 and 10 were in the range of 0.09–0.15 μg/kg and 0.30–0.50 μg/kg for rice and maize samples, respectively. Also, the inter- and intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) for real samples were in the range of 5.20–5.50% and 3.75–3.95%, respectively. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for determination of AFB1 in various rice and maize samples, yielding AFB1 recoveries of 88.8–105.0% in rice and 84.2–93.5% in maize.
