Emotional Intelligence in Ian McEwan's Machines Like Me

  • Original language description

Emotional intelligence is a core aspect of human personality. It plays a significant role in forming and maintaining interpersonal relationships and is important for navigating social life. Recognising both one’s own emotions and those of others is crucial for building social bonds, integrating into society, and managing one’s own and others’ behaviour. This paper explores the emotional development of artificially created humanoids and human characters, as well as the question of what it means to be human, through the lens of posthuman thinking. The analysis examines the extent to which the behaviour of artificially created machines resembles authentic emotional growth and how human-android interactions influence emotional development.
