Scalable, Compact and Easy-to-Control Linear Electromagnetic Actuator
Original language description
The design of a compact and scalable linear electromagnetic actuator with spatially selective actuation and magnetic stabilization is presented. The concept is based on multi-layer coplanar coil topology, which operates rare-earth-based permanent magnet sliders and takes advantage of all the parts formed by a printed circuit board (PCB). With its potential applications in the precise manipulation of small loads and control of mechanisms in microgravity environments, the actuator stands out in compact and scalable dimensions, low weight and inertia, ease of deployment open-loop control, low manufacturing demands, material resistance, and durability. The paper discusses the basic design, construction, and actuator operation and presents the first experimental verification of the actuator concept.
