Scalable, compact and easy-to-control linear electromagnetic actuator
Original language description
The design of a compact and scalable linear electromagnetic actuator with spatially selective actuation and magnetic stabilization is presented. The concept is based on multi-layer coplanar coil topology, which operates rare-earth-based permanent magnet riders and takes advantage of all the parts formed by a printed circuit board (PCB). The paper presents the basic topology, rigid and flexible prototype design, spatially selective operation of multiple riders on one actuator and magnetic stabilization of the rider motion. The basic experimental verification of the first prototype is described by measuring actuation forces, load capacity, positioning precision and operation temperature. Spatially selective operation and stabilization are further analyzed based on motion analysis. With its potential applications in the precise manipulation of small loads and control of mechanisms, the actuator stands out in compact and scalable dimensions, low weight and inertia, ease of deployment, open-loop control, low manufacturing demands, material resistance, and durability.
