The University of West Bohemia archaeological expedition to Arbil in northern Iraq
Original language description
The city of Arbil, the past of which has been explored by a Czech-Kurdish mission since 2006, does display a settlement history reaching back to the 6th millenium B. C. and possibly even further (finds of Middle Palaeolithic stone tools). In Assyrian times, the complex city structure emerged combining the palatial and temple area in the citadel, probably a secondary citadel and residential as well as funeral areas in the well-fortified Lower town. The Assyrian megalopolis underwent a substantial transformation during Sasanid and Islamic periods.
