    At present, there is an open question how to explain enhanced properties of superhard films, which arc formed by one nanocrystalline phase only. Therefore, this paper is devoted to the investigation of the Zr-Ti-Cu-N films, which are typical representatives of hard single-phase nanostructured nitrides based on solid solutions. It presents a detailed analysis of the structure-hardness relations in superhard Zr-Ti-Cu-N films with low and high Ti content and tries to explain the origin of enhanced hardnessof these materials, which can achieve up to about twice or more than that of nitrides of individual elements, from which the quaternary alloy is composed.
