Surface density of dermo-epidermal lamellae and mechanical testing of suspensory apparatus of equine hoof
Original language description
The corio-epidermal junction (CEJ) of equine hoof is suspensory apparatus between the wall of the hoof and the distal phalanx. We assessed the surface density of lamellae of CEJ as well as mechanical behavior of suspensory apparatus. We also concentratedon creation of 3D reconstruction of the equine hoof included wall horn, pars inflexa, digital cushion, solea, ligaments, tendons, frog, navicular bone, distal phalanx and corium. The mechanical properties of frozen and of formalin-fixed tissue samples were determined using uniaxial tensile tests. The surface density of the primary (PL) and secondary (SL) lamellae of CEJ was estimated using the 3D reconstruction and using stereological method employing the testing probe of circular arcs. Morphological results showed that the surface density of the SL was higher in the epidermal region than in the dermal region. Mechanical results showed that moduli of elasticity in fixed samples were stiffer by one order than in frozen sampl es.
