Nanostructured CuWO4/WO3 Bilayers for Hydrogen Gas Sensing
Original language description
Nanostructured branched like islands of copper tungstate (CuWO4) and nanocrystalline tungsten trioxide (WO3) films were prepared by a reactive sputtering technique. It was a two step deposition process in which WO3 deposition was followed by CuO deposition magnetron sputtering in DC and RF modes, respectively. In order to fabricate CuWO4/WO3 bilayers the thicknesses of WO3 and CuO were varied and the nano-junction was formed during the deposition of CuO film on pre-deposited WO3 at high temperature (400 °C). As-prepared CuWO4/WO3 bilayers were investigated for sensitivity towards H2 gas. It was observed that the sensitivity for the pure WO3 was enhanced by over-layering with CuWO4. The sensitivity specimen 5nm CuO on 20 nm WO3 was observed maximum (up to 5). On the basis of SEM, XRD, and sensorial response we propose that the sensing mechanism is based on the formation of the n-n type nano-junction between n-type WO3 and CuWO4.
