Original language description
The article reports on the structure, chemical composition and hardness of ZrN/Cu films by dc reactive magnetron sputtering. It was found that there is a strong correlation between the structure of the film, its hardness and Cu content. The superhard (>=40 GPa) ZrN/Cu films are characterized by a columnar structure and a strong reflection from ZrN grains with single ZrN(111) orientation and no reflections from Cu. These films with a hardness of 54 GPa exhibit a high elasticity of about 80% and contain approximately 1-2 wt.% Cu. On the contrary, the hard (< 40 GPa) ZrN/Cu films are characterized by many weak reflections from poly-oriented ZrN and Cu grains, columnarless microstructure and higher Cu content than 2 wt.%. The superhard nc-ZrN/Cu nanocomposite films represent a new class of superhard materials of the type nc-MeN/metal.
