Biocompatibility, biodegradability, and toxicity evaluations of chitosan nanoparticles
Original language description
The advent of nanotechnology has propelled the exploration of nanomaterials for diverse biomedical applications. Chitosan (CS) is a naturally occurring biopolymer, offers exceptional biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity, rendering it particularly attractive for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) are emerging as a focal point of investigation in biomedical fields due to their unique properties. The pivotal aspects of the evaluation of CSNPs are their safety and efficacy in biological systems. Biocompatibility, a critical parameter for any biomaterial, underscores its ability to interact with living tissues without eliciting adverse reactions. The inherent compatibility of CS with various biological systems has spurred interest in understanding its interactions at the cellular level while its biodegradability is essential for applications that requires controlled release of therapeutic agents. Moreover, investigating the gradual degradation of CSNPs under simulated physiological conditions is crucial for assessing their sustainability and environmental impact. The toxicity profile of CSNPs is a paramount consideration for their biomedical use. This necessitates comprehensive evaluations employing in vitro and in vivo models to delineate potential adverse effects. Understanding the dose-response relationships and administration routes is vital for establishing the safety thresholds of CSNPs in various clinical contexts. In light of these considerations, this chapter provides a holistic understanding of the biocompatibility, biodegradability, and toxicity profiles of CSNPs. The outcomes of this research hold promise for advancing the utilization of CSNPs in cutting-edge biomedical applications.
