“Why Should We Be Brayge?” Elements of the Jewish Ethnolect in Czech Jewish Literature in the twentieth and at the Beginning of the twenty-first Century

  • Original language description

Some authors use ethnolectal elements not only to construct an image of the Czech Jewish milieu but to stylise their texts. These authors’ approaches differ according to their target audience, the extent of their use of irony, wordplay and other literary devices and, above all, the conditions within which the texts were written and read (e. g. some were written in the context of the Second World War). Although these elements are particularly evident in prose works, somecan also be found in poems or theatre scripts. The common feature of these authors is the Jewish identity they express in their texts. The ethnolectal elements serve as markers of a literary Jewishness together with motifs connected to religious tradition or often reflecting personal or inherited experiences of anti-Semitism and the Shoah. Typically, these texts feature a combination of some of these Jewish signs.
