The law concerning witnesses in Deut 19:15-21. Comparing the Septuagint, Masoretic Text, Targum Onqelos and Vulgate

  • Original language description

This study reads the Greek text of Deuteronomy 19:15–21 in the Septuagint (LXX) against the background of the Masoretic text, and compares it with the text of the Targumim, especially Targum Onqelos, and the Vulgate. It marks several interesting differences between these versions, namely in the cases of the LXX’s expressions ἄδικος (“unjust”, Hebrew עון), ἀσέβεια (“impiety”, Hebrew סרה), ἐπονηρεύσατο (“he intended maliciously”, Hebrew זמם), τὸν πονηρὸν (“the evil one”, Hebrew רע) and ἐξετάσωσιν (“let [the judges] examine”, Hebrew ודרשו). The research has demonstrated LXX’s tendency to interpret the legal text basically as dealing with the problem of injustice and impiety in general, disregarding the legal nuances expressed in the original Hebrew text as well as in the Targum Onqelos. The theological and moral understanding of the text in LXX can further be contrasted with the Vulgate, which presents the case as clearly a legal text, but probably does not understand it anymore as legally relevant.
