Dietary n-3/n-6 ratio affects the biochemical composition of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) semen but not indicators of sperm quality
Original language description
This study investigated the effects of the dietary fatty acids (FAs) on the quality and on the chemical composition of sperm in Eurasian perch. Two experimental diets containing 16% lipids and 45% proteins were compared. The n-3/n-6 ratios tested were 0.2 for diet 1 (D1), and 7.0 for diet 2 (D2). No significant differences were reported between D1 and D2 concerning the relationship between the volume of sperm product and the weight of males, the sperm density, motility and velocity, neither for the sperm osmolality. All those parameters corresponded to semen of good quality. FA composition and the lipid class profile of the semen were both correlated to the tested diet. Although, basal levels of certain highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3) were maintained in the sperm whatever the tested diet, due to their structural and/or functional roles. Perch semen was characterized by high levels of cholester
