    Activation of insect anti-oxidative mechanism by mammalian glucagon

    The effect of glucagon was evaluated in an insect model species, the firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus. Using the mouse anti-glucagon antibody, presence of immunoreactive material was demonstrated for the first time in the firebug CNS and gut by ELISA. Mammalian glucagon elicited the antioxidant response by increasing glutathione and decreasing protein carbonyl levels in hemolymph, decreasing both protein carbonyl and protein nitrotyrosine levels in CNS. Additionally, when co-injected with paraquat, glucagonpartially eliminated oxidative stress markers elicited by this redox cycling agent and oxidative stressor. This indicates that glucagon might induce an antioxidant defense in insects, as recently described for adipokinetic hormone.

    Pro studium účinku glukagonu na hmyzím modelu byla vybrána ploštice Pyrrhocoris apterus. Za použití protilátky proti glukagonu byla přítomnost tohoto hormonu prokázána v CNS a střevě. Glukagon stimuloval antioxidační mechanismy zvýšením hladiny gluthationu a snížením proteinových karbonylů v hemolymfě, a snížením obsahu jak proteinových kabonylů, tak nitrotyrozinů v CNS. Současná injekce paraquatu a glukagonu eliminovala oxidační stres vyvolaný tímto stresorem. To naznačuje, že glukagon hraje roli v antioxidační obraně hmyzu stejně jako bylo nedávno popsáno u adipokinetického hormonu.
