    Neoparamoeba perurans

    Neoparamoeba perurans is the most significant amphizoic amoeba in marine aquaculture, causing amoebic gill disease (AGD), a potentially fatal disease in economically valuable fish species. It was first identified in the 1990s and formally described in 2007 as a member of the Amoebozoa group. This parasite poses a major threat for farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), where it leads to substantial economic losses. N. perurans is a cosmopolitan, free-living and facultative ectoparasite that infects gill filaments, inducing a localized response in the gill epithelium. This results in the formation of multifocal mucoid patches at the site of attachment on the gills. Signs of AGD include mucus accumulation on the gills, hyperplastic lesions, white spots, and progressive gill degradation. Infected fish with advanced AGD show signs of respiratory distress, such as rapid opercular movements and lethargy.
