A bait for locust (Locusta migratoria migratorioides) suitable for oral application of juvenile hormone analogues.
Original language description
In order to find an ecologically-sound way of the plague locusts control we have searched for a suitable bait and insect growth regulator to arrest their reproduction and development. I have used wheat bran finalized with sunflower, flax seed, olive, castor and paraphine oils as a bait. The tests were performed on the adults and larvae of Locust migratoria migratorioides. The most acceptable for both larvae and adult locusts was the bait finalized with sunflower oil. This bait was then used to test juvenoids, hydroprene and methoprene which were mixed with sunflower oil in concentrations 0.25 mg/g and 0.75 mg/g on the freshly molted fifth instar larvae at continuous exposition for five days. The orally applied juvenoids induced both morphogenic effectsand solitary pigmentation. Methoprene was more effective than hydroprene. These juvenoids revealed no deterrent effects.
