The article analysed of the development, construction and operational record of the AIM-120 AMRAAM, the main type of a medium-range air-to-air missile in most of the NATO member countries? air forces. Next construes possible competitors in this area andtheir tactical and technical possibilities. Next missile are for example AIM-7 Sparrow medium range missile (MRM), AIM-54 Phoenix long range missile (LRM) and their similar AIM-47/YF-12 to optimize dogfight performance. The missile also features the ability to "Home on Jamming," giving it the ability to switch over from active radar homing to passive homing - homing on jamming signals from the target aircraft. Software on board the missile allows it to detect if it is being jammed, and guide on its target using the proper guidance system.
