Testing hops for drought resistance and the use of prespective genotypes in growing and brewing practice(poster)

  • Original language description

The poster presentation on 16th International Trends in Brewing, April 8, 2025, Leuven, Belgium. Global climate change affects, among other things, the cultivation of raw materials for the production of beer. The presented project "Application of new varieties and genotypes of hops resistant to drought in growing and brewing practice", No. QK 21010136 supported by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, solves this issue by selecting new genotypes of hops tolerant to drought. These varieties are suitable for growing in dry areas without irrigation. Greenhouse water stress tests were carried out based on monitoring the rate of photosynthesis and transpiration after the end of irrigation and after 10 days of water stress. The results are verified in field trials with and without irrigation. From the current Czech assortment of hop varieties, the fine aromatic varieties Saaz Shine and Saaz Comfort and the "flavor" varieties Juno, Ceres and Saturn show good drought tolerance. Genotypes with higher drought tolerance were found within the breeding genotypes. As of 2022, 2 new bitter type genotypes (5165 “Uran” and 5304), 3 aromatic type genotypes (5431, 5461, 5465) and fine aroma (5559) are in registration trials. Currently, it has been possible to obtain other prospective drought-resistant genotypes as well as breeding genotypes for crossing from wild hops. All new genotypes are tested in semi-operational plots by hop farmers and are simultaneously tested in craft and large breweries. The beer results show that the new genotypes are suitable for a wide range of beer styles. In 2025, the registration of new drought-tolerant hop varieties, which are already known in Czech breweries, is expected. Thanks to direct cooperation with breweries, an increase in demand for these varieties has been recorded, which leads to a gradual increase in the planting of cultivation areas without irrigation.
