Currently, a resource-based approach is the trend for building a competetive advantage. Thus human resources are considered as a basic and strategic resource of an enterprise. So human resource management is regarded as a key asset for the effective management of employees. Therefore performance appraisal is the key human resource concept, considered as one of the most important tools for human resource management. The first part of this article deals with the theoretical background of the terms formal appraisal, appraiser and performance appraisal methods. Then the article describes the results of a case study, based on in-depth interviews carried out with top managers (n=3) in the agricultural enterprise A. The main aim of the article is to identify the importance of performance appraisal as a managerial function in agriculture. A partial aim is to test dependencies between ordinal variables.
