Modus of inheritance of melanoma tumours in pigs
Original language description
A selective breeding of miniature pigs bearing pigmented skin tumours resulted in the establishment of a line with inherited malignant melanoma (melanoblastoma). The strain of minipigs was designated by the acronym MeLiM (Melanoblastoma-bearing LibechovMinipigs). Different mating schedules of affected and non-affected animals could be achieved by permanent survival of tumour carriers after treatment by simple ischaemization (devitalization) (Horák et al. 1999). The inheritance of melanoma was tested ina progeny comprising 456 animals from 78 litters. Spontaneous regression of some tumours appeared in 2/3 of examined pigs and 1/3 of non-treated animals died, proving the melanoma malignancy.
