Enrichment of bifidobacteria in the hen caeca by dietary inulin
Original language description
Eight laying hens were assigned randomly to two treatments: 1) control, standard diet; 2) standard diet supplemented with inulin (5%). After 7 days the birds were killed, caecal contents were collected, bifidobacteria population were enumerated, and microbial metabolites were analysed. Caecal bifidobacterial concentration were increased (P<0.01) more than 3-fold in inulin-treated birds compared to controls, with bifidobacteria counts being 9.64 and 10.17 log CFU/g of caecal content in birds fed the control and inulin diet, respectively. Dietary inulin had no effect on caecal microbial metabolite concentration. The proportion of inulin fermenting bifidobacteria in the total bifidobacteria counts was increased (P<0.01) 2-fold in inulin-treated birds compared to controls.
