Original language description
The airn of this study was to investigate the impact of dietary inulin to caecal bifidobacteria counts of laying hens. The concentration of caecal microbial metabolites was also assessed. Eight laying hens were assigned randontly to two treatments: 1) control, standard diet; 2) standard diet supplemented with inulin (5%). After 7 days the birds were killed, caecal contents were collected, bifidobacteria populations were enumerated, and microbial metabolites were analysed. Caecal bifidobacterial concentrations were increased (P<0.01 ) more than 3-fold in inulin-treated birds compared with controls. Dietary inulin had no effect on caecal microbial metabolite concentration. The proportion of inulin fermenting bifidobacteria in the total bifidobacteria counts was increased (P<0.01 ) 2-fold in inulin-treated birds compared with controls.
