Occurence of bifidobacteria in hen gastrointestinal tract

Original language description

A new medium for enumeration of bifidobacteria in poultry gastrointestinal tract was developed. TPY (ADSA. Spain) agar was modified by the adition of glacial acetic acid (1 ml/I) and mupirocin (100 mg/I). Bifidohacteria counts were assessed in crop, caecal and faecal samples. Twelve laying hens (Dominant hnědý, Dobřenice. Czech Repuhlic) were used. Bifidobacteria strains isolated were tested for fermentation patterns using ANAEROBEtest (Lachema, Czech Repuhlic) and API 50 CHL (Biomérieux, France) kits.Bifidobacteria counts were higher than 1010 CFU/g of caecal contents. In addition, bifidobacteria counts were 1010 CFU/g of crop contents and 1O8 CFU/g of fecal contenls. Most of bifidobacteria strains isolated from hen crop fermented gluucose, fructose.maltose, galactose. On the other hand mostl of strains isolated frorn caecal samples fermented sucrose and raffinose but not glucose. lt could be concluded thal the media for selective enumeration and isolation of bifidobacteria in poult
