The best performing clone X-HisCUP accumulates by 77% more Cd in above ground parts of tobacco plants comparing to controls. The results show that the introduction of an additional heavy-metal binding site has a significant effect on cd accumulation in harvestable parts. In order to have an effective model for further uptake studies, hairy roor cultures were initiated from clone X-HisCUP, as well as from control tobacco, using five five different strains of Agrobacterium rhizogenes.
