Plants of the genera Leuzea DC. (Compositae) and Nigella L. (Ranunculaceae) have been traditionally used as treatment for a wide range of health disorders. Leuzea carthamoides DC. and Nigella sativa L. have been the subjects of the many chemical and pharmacological studies because of their marked biological activities, e. g. immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. The antimicrobial activity of crude methanol extracts from roots and aerial parts of Leuzea centauroides (L.) Holub, L. longifolia Hoffmgg. & Link. L. rhapontica subsp. bicknellii (Briq.) Holub, Nigella damascena L., and N. hispanica L. was tested against Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans by the broth tubemacrodilution method. Results showed that extracts from aerial parts of L. centauroides, L. longifolia, and L. rhapontica subsp. bicknellii and roots of N. damascena and N. hispanica possessed the highest antimicrobial activity.
