Original language description
Phenyl(hydroxy)ethylguanines, in particular 7-(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethyl)guanine and 7-(2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl)guanine, are important markers of exposure to styrene as well as indicators of DNA damage caused by styrene 7,8-oxide, a styrene metabolite. Animproved synthetic procedure leading to these compounds has been developed. As a rule, the alkylation reactions of guanine and guanine derivatives are rather unselective. The selectivity of alkylation was improved by using 7-methyl-10-oxo-9,10-dihydropyrimido[1,2-a]purine as a protected guanine compound, and allyl-protected bromohydrins as synthetic equivalents of styrene 7,8-oxide.
